Hiab Debessai is an Editorial Assistant at One World working with authors such as Ta-Nehisi Coates, Quiara Alegría Hudes, Karla Cornejo-Villavicencio, Dr. Ibram X. Kendi, Trevor Noah, Jamilah Lemieux, Dr. Mona, Victor LaValle, and Valarie Kaur. Hiab is interested in narratives that purposely play with form to get us to see our world and selves in new and important ways. In fiction, she is looking for works that sit comfortably within upmarket and literary fiction, stories that feature dangerous and messy womxn with sound reasoning/judgement, literature that troubles our understandings of romance and friendship, and distilled, haunting narratives that ask timely philosophical questions. She is also interested in speculative fiction, horror, and romance that centers often-overlooked perspectives, and works that have firm setting and/or memory in the African continent. In nonfiction, Hiab is interested in memoir, cultural criticism, and narrative journalism that gives us a window into specific subcultures, untold histories, and/or rituals for the purpose of revealing how we are all connected.
